Food Glorious Food

Last Sunday we had an international food night here at College. We had food from, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, India, England and Australia. My contribution was of course......Pavlova. I made two, and the first one fell apart completely, but it was apparently still delicious. It was a fantastic night and it was good to get to see different cultural eating habits.

Elizabeth's No Good, Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad Day

Well it has been one of those days. I have no idea why everything went wrong today, it was just one of those days when I got out of the wrong side of bed (which is pretty hard considering that my bed is up against a wall). Maybe it started before I got out of bed though, I really didn't feel like getting out of bed this morning. Then I was late for work and it was all locked up so Karen and I had to rush around opening everything up before the kids came. Then I found myself getting anoyed with the kids for no reason, they were perfectly reasonable requests that they were making but today they really got to me. Then I told one of the parents off because they were standing around with the gate open and I was worried that one of the children would escape.
I did improve after that, I was perfectly happy by dinner time. I guess taking the time out to look at ALFIE Stories really helped me.

This is a song by another of my favourite artists Jeremy Camp. I like this song because it helps me to realise that no matter what happens to me, no matter if I turn away from God he will always be there waiting for me. When the things that happen to me hurt and make me feel down 'even when the pain is coming through', God will be right where he was last time. I am so thankful for this

Hobart

Last week I went on holiday to Hobart for a week. Hobart is a really beautiful place with lots of interesting things to see.

While in Hobart I visited some historical places like Narryna Heritage Museum. This is a house that was built in 1836 for a seafaring gentleman named Captain Andrew Haig. It is set up as a merchants residence and shows items that were used from 1803 to1900. It is a very interesting place to visit

Another historical place I visite is shown in the pictures above this. It is St David's Park. Now this site was originally the public cemetery for Hobart. It was then turned into a park and the headstones were placed into walls in the park. The larger headstones were left where they were. It is another interesting place to visit.

This picture is of a view from Mt Wellington. This is the mountain near Hobart. it was very cold when I went up there. There was no snow but there was frost on the ground. I was glad to get back on to the bus as there was not mush visible there as the clouds had come down on the mountain.

This is from another historic site in Hobart. It is the Peniteniary Chapel Site. The Chapel was built along with barracks for convicts when free settlers arrived in the Colony. They did not want to mix with the convicts so a seperate church was built for them and Solitary Confinement cells were built into it underneath the seats that sloped down from the top. Most of the cells were not able to be stood up in. After new convicts stopped coming to the land the barracks were bulldozed and two wings of the chapel were turned into the Local Court and the High Court. These were still in use until 1984 with tiny cells for those awaiting trail that were like cages. There was also the execution area where the criminals were hanged. When someone was hanged the bell was rung 13 times to signify that the judge and 12 man jury had spoken. For the same reason there were 13 twists of rope around the top of the noose.

While in Hobart I also visited the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery which had some interesting exhibitions. I also had a look around the waterfront and saw Constitution dock where the Sydney to Hobart finishes.

Who is wearing that Silly hat?

Well you may be wondering about these silly hats, why on earth are all these people wearing such silly hats?

I will expalain it too you. Last wednesday we had our end of term dinner and to enter the dining room we had to wear hats. These are a selection of the fantastic and silly hats that some of the people were wearing.

It was a fantastic time with a delicious meal and we even had a game.

We were divided up into 5 teams of 5 and given a scenario which was that we were missionaries in a country called Absurdistan where the chickens roosted in the ceiling and the eggs were always smashing on the ground so the people were malnourished. We had to make an egg catcher that would catch an egg dropped from 2 m. The materials we had were 10 straws a thick piece of cardboard and a thin one big scissors and small scissors sticky tape and a balloon. Each team was given two tries dropping an egg onto it from the 2 m height and awarded points depending on how the egg ended up. My team one woo hoo.

Things that go Bump (or Rrrrrrrrrrring) in the night

Well recently I have had some night time adventures.

Firstly a couple of weeks ago on Monday night/Tuesday morning I fell out of bed, at 1 am. Now this happened because my bed is one of those beds with a base made out of a mattress with legs with another mattress on top. Now the top mattress was hanging over the edge of the bottom one and rolled over to that side of the bed and tipped it. The mattress landed on it's side on the floor and I landed next to it. In fixing up my bed i bumped the light switch which is behind my bed and turned on the light thus waking me up fully, and so I noticed the time. I did get back to sleep pretty quickly though.

My latest adventure in the dark happened last Monday morning. The fire alarm went off at 6 am and so the whole college went out to the car park in the cold, foggy morning in their pyjamas. The high light of this or deal was that the children were excited to see the fire engine. The low light of the ordeal was that the trigger came from v block which is the single female block and so we all had to stay out after all the others could go back inside. I gues that something that we can praise God for is that there was not actually any fire.

To Be a Duck (Or a Pig)

Well today was our day for visiting AGFEST. It was a great day out. But as you may have guessed from the title it was raining, and the ground was covered in mud. The bottom of my jeans was covered in mud before we even got inside the event, just from walking through the car park, and when we left there was mud halfway up my thighs!!!! We had to leave earlier than we had planned because it was too wet and there wasn't that much shelter.
Despite all this we really enjoyed ourselves while we were there. We saw a lot of things while we were there, we saw, cows, alpacas, goats, sheep dog exhibition, puppies, tractors four wheel drives doing a course to see what they could do and a couple of helicopters.
We were all exhausted when we got back.

Thomas The Tank Engine

Thomas the Tank Engine and friends came to the Apple Isle on Saturday 14 April. The families of the preschool children here went along to see him and I went along with him. We got to go on a train ride that was pulled out by Thomas's friend Donald (unless it was Douglas). And was then pulled back in by the one and only ........Thomas. It was great fun especially because I haven't been on a train for two months and the islanders have probably never been on one. As well as those two engines we also saw Thomas's Carriages Annie and Clarabel, the troublesome Trucks and Trevor the Traction Engine.
We also enjoyed a picnic lunch in the park and a trip to the House of Anvers Chocolate Factory, where we had delicious ice creams, including Licorice ice creams had by some of us.... delicious.

Happy Birthday to me...

You may have guessed from the title that today is my birthday.
It has been a great day, what made it great? you may ask, well I will tell you the answer.

Firstly, last night i was not looking forward to it being my birthday because it is my first birthday away from home. Well everyone has been saying happy birthday to me and so many people have given me cards and stuff that it made me feel special.

The other really good thing that happened was at the play centre they had a little party for me, and that was good, cause it's nice to commemorate these things in some way.

Finally...

Tasmania is cold
Well when I first arrived the weather was warm, and I thought to myself what is everyone talking about Tasmania isn't cold. Then the mornings and evenings began to get cold and sometimes it is still cold in the middle of the day.

What have I Been Doing Lately?
Well I have been looking after kids, we have 7 kids two who when they arrived didn't speak English but they are learning. The ages of the children range from 14 months to 5 and it is fun watching the little ones as they are beginning to talk. We have taken the kids on an excursion to City Park and they had fun playing and watching the

The Gorge
I went with a lot of the students to Cataract Gorge. The area there is really beautiful. There is a pool there and you can also swim in the river, but I didn't go swimming. i did however go for a walk with some of the others and we saw a wallaby.

Tamar Island Wetlands
We had a public holiday in March and on that day i went with a group of students to Tamar Island Wetlands which is a wetlands area that has a board walk that you can walk across to 3 or four Islands, while we were there we saw heaps of birds including black swans and we even saw a couple of snakes.

Ben Lomond
Last Saturday I went with a couple of families to Ben Lomond which is the local mountain. It was cold there. We went for a walk on the mountain and had some gread views of the area. We even saw a couple of Wallabies.

Way Down South Where The Apples Grow...

Well all of you out there I'm moving down to the Apple Isle. That lovely little Island to the south of the Great South Land ...Australia. This Island is also known as Tasmania for those who are not up on Australian geography. Now why am I going all the way down there? Well I'm going to the second major city (town) Launceston, to a Bible college which is run by WEC to help look after the children of students while they are in classes. I will be leaving around the 8th February
and will be back home late November or early December ...I'll be home for Christmas, God willing.

Thia song was written by the young people in my church a couple of years ago, it is based on Philippians 4:8-13. It is a good reminder to us that God is always with us and he is looking after us no matter what happens in our lives. He is 'always listening, always near' and he is ready to help us when we ask.

Fight Like a Girl...You Know You Want To

I recently read this book Fight Like a Girl by Lisa Bevere.
This book is about how in modern society we have confused what the gender roles are. The book sets out to help discover what God intended a woman's role to be.
The book explains that women are the completion of men, that the first man that God created, Adam, was alone in the world and wanted a companion that he couldn't find in the animals, so God created a woman, Eve, to be his companion, the answer to man's question. WOMEN ARE AN ANSWER.
Due to the fact that we complete each other we have complimentary strengths which define our roles so that we can help each other. The things that women do well are things that men do not do as well and vice versa, so we need to work together so that we can live in the world the way that God intended.
Any women out there should read this book so that we can set out on the road that God wanted us to be on.

Happy (belated) New Year

Happy New Year to everyone who reads my blog. I had a great new years eve.
As usual we had a function/party at the church it was really good. We played board games and we had a Trivia Quiz which unbelievable as it may seem my team one. We got the first five wrong and then we got the other 15 questions right. Some of us went up the street at 8:30/8:45 so that we could see the 9:00 fire works which we have a good few of from there. That was fun. We had a prayer time to pray in the new year at 11:30 and then watched the midnight fireworks at 12. It was a good time to share with others and to remember that God is always with us even when it is a new year and things seem to be changing.
